Roots Mbili Theatre launches in Sheffield with the play “Far Gone”

Roots Mbili Theatre has been established by friends John Rwoth-Omack, Sam Holland and Smart Banda. and is launching with their play “Far Gone” at Sheffield Theatres from 17th to 26th February.

“Roots Mbili” is a combination of English and Swahili translating to “Two Roots,” a reflection of Artistic Director, John Rwoth-Omack’s vision for the company’s aspiration to platform stories from Africa and its diaspora in the UK.

Their journey started in 2018, on Bad Blood Blues, a show that explored western exploitation of African nations and people and this paved the way for us to make unflinching and honest theatre that doesn’t shy away from exposing the ugly societal truths while representing marginalised voices in this traditionally white dominated industry.

“Far Gone” which is co-produced with Sheffield Theatres, portrays the impact of Joseph Kony’s LRA on child soldiers in Uganda and South Sudan. It was in Sheffield Theatres before the pandemic but got disrupted. It’s very insightful & was written by John and directed by another Sheffield based director, Mojisola Elufowoju. Far Gone will go on to tour the north of England
