Children’s Book Written in Honour of Mansa Musa

King Mansa Musa was the ninth ruler of the Mali Empire and is known for being the wealthiest man who ever lived in the world. His story of wealth, empire and generosity has largely been passed on orally but a recent shift has seen an increase in written accounts.

One such is the children's book "Mansa Musa: The Richest Man Who Ever Lived" authored by Manchester based women. The writers launched the book during Black History month 2022. Tikhala Chimpango, Mhla Edith Shela and Patricia Kulipa Chimangeni wrote the book for 5-9 year olds as a labour of love to all children of African descent to embed a part of their history that affirms their good heritage.

Tchiyiwe Chihana interviewed co-author Chimpango who is also an educator, doctorate student and host of the podcast "Rethinking Fairness in Education in Malawi."

She discusses the book, aspirations and the desire to contribute to decolonising the curriculum and tackling structural racism by authoring more books through their newly established company, Gems of Africa.
