Stab victim's family expresses disappointment but accepts court's decision
The mother of a young black man who was brutally stabbed to death while distributing church leaflets by a white racist in Sheffield city centre has told African Voices Platform, she and her family have accepted the court's decision to sentence her son’s killer under the mental health act 1983.
Speaking to Baillor Jalloh, Mart Koroma said: “Yes I welcome the decision. On behalf of my family, we all welcome it, although we are a bit disappointed because it’s a painful death and it’s a racial issue, but we don’t have a choice.”
On Friday, 17th September 2021, officers were called to High Street at around 4.30pm following reports of a stabbing. On arrival detectives found Mohamed Issa Kioroma, age 24 in a pool of blood with serious and critical injuries to his neck. A post-mortem examination concluded that he died as a result of the stab wounds he had suffered. James Lee, age 32, of Doncaster Road, Rotherham, was arrested and later charged. Lee was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday 11th November, 2022 after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the ground of diminished responsibility. He was sentenced to an indefinite detention at a mental health hospital under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act. The court heard Lee will also be subject to special restrictions, which will ensure continued monitoring throughout his life.
